2015 Mar 01Guide for the establishment of incentives in a co-management governance of protected areas in Burundi
Since 2009, Burundi has made commitments to ensure participatory management of protected areas. The objective of this new approach was to eliminate coercive management that had prevented, since 1980, local populations from using the natural resources of protected areas.
Some protected areas therefore have management committees set up in a participatory framework. Currently, Burundi would like to establish a standard mechanism for setting up incentives in protected areas.
It is in this framework that this guide is prepared. It aims to provide guidance to make it easier for curators to put in place incentives. The principle is that any incentive measures are established taking into account the root causes of biodiversity degradation and loss. In addition, an incentive measure is selected and implemented by the beneficiaries.
