2020 Jan 01Integrated Community Development Project in Burundi “Turikumwe”: Environmental and Social Management Framework
The CGES is a preliminary environmental assessment mechanism provided for by NES No. 1 to examine risks and effects when a project consists of a program and/or a series of sub-projects, and these risks and effects cannot be determined until the details of the program or sub-project have been identified. The “TURIKUMWE” project is composed of a series of sub-projects that have not yet been determined. Thus, their specific sites and technologies are not yet known and their risks and effects cannot be identified at this stage, hence the preparation of the CGES.
The CGES defines the principles, rules, guidelines and procedures for assessing environmental and social risks and effects. It contains measures and plans to reduce, mitigate and/or compensate for risks and negative impacts, provisions for estimating and budgeting the cost of these measures, and information on the agency or agencies responsible for managing the risks and impacts of the project, including their corresponding capabilities. It provides relevant information on the area in which the sub-projects should be carried out, as well as the possible environmental and social vulnerabilities of this area; and on the effects that could occur and the mitigation measures that could be expected to be applied.
