2006 Mar 01Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) in Burundi
There are huge gaps in the hydrogeological data of Burundi. The quantities and quality of groundwater are not yet known. The same is the spatial distribution of groundwater. However, the National Water Master Plan (PDNE) indicates that overall Burundi has a flow at sources of about 6,600 liters of water per second. Imbo, Kumoso and Bugesera are the natural regions with the weakest sources. On the other hand, the high-altitude regions of Mugamba, Mumirwa and Bututsi are well supplied with spring water with specific flows greater than 0.3l/s*km2. On the other hand, deep springs are more abundant in the natural regions of Imbo and Kumoso. The Bugesera region is the most disadvantaged in terms of total groundwater resources.
