In Burundi, fishing and aquaculture activities have long occupied a significant place, especially from a socio-economic point of view.

They provide income, contribute to the improvement of the diet by providing animal proteins and generate jobs for a large part of the Burundian population who live near the lakes in particular and throughout the country in general.

The new Fisheries and Aquaculture Law was enacted in November 2016. However, the latter needs to be operationalized.
