2021 Apr 01National Drought Control Plan in Burundi (PNS Burundi)
As the operational body of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification, the Global Mechanism (GM) has taken the initiative to support Burundi in implementing the Convention by developing a national plan to combat drought. The national drought plan aims to put in place a reliable and functional system to deal with the drought problem and prepare for effective resilience for people, communities, and ecosystems. This plan has set 3 specific objectives, namely: (i) identify the key factors of current and future vulnerability in various sectors and prioritize the adaptation options to be implemented; (ii) propose structuring investments necessary to improve the adaptation and resilience capacities of affected communities in order to protect them against the current and future impacts of drought; and (iii) propose an appropriate political and institutional framework for effective drought management. To achieve these objectives, the working methodology used was structured around eight steps, namely: (i) the appointment of a working group, (ii) the definition of the objectives of the plan, (iii) the mobilization of stakeholders, (iv) the inventory or situation analysis, (iv) the inventory or analysis of the situation, (v) the drafting of the plan, (v) the drafting of the plan, (vi) the identification of unmet needs and the filling of institutional gaps, (vii) communication and education and finally (viii) the evaluation of the plan. The National Drought Plan is a gateway to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
