In 2014, the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock commissioned the development of the National Strategy for the Development of the Rice Sector in Burundi (SNDRB). The objectives of this strategy are to provide stakeholders with strategic guidelines and tools for making decisions and actions that can contribute to substituting local rice production for current imports by increasing the productive capital of poor rural people in terms of physical and productivity, by developing marshes and rice-growing areas in order to achieve a level of water control that allows yields quite higher than the current average of 3 tons/hectare while taking concrete measures to integrate support for the intensification of rice production into a sustainable and profitable value chain.
