2012 Oct 01Opportunities in the renewable energy sector in Burundi
Access to electricity for the Burundian population remains very low (10%) compared to other countries in the East African Community. However, the hydroelectric potential is 1,700 MW, of which 300 MW are sites of more than 1 MW. At present, only 32 MW are exploited.
The development of the private sector in Burundi is now a central axis of economic recovery, its role as an engine of growth being recognized by the Government. Structural reforms have therefore been put in place, such as the disengagement of the State from productive sectors in favor of private companies and the liberalization of the economy.
In this respect, the Government of Burundi is committed to the development of an energy sector policy and action plan. This aims to facilitate the supply and demand of energy for the Burundian population in a sustainable way.
