Since 2016, Burundi has established reference indicators to monitor the evolution of species and ecosystems providing ecosystem services.
Natural ecosystems are divided into two main groups: terrestrial ecosystems including forests, savannas, groves, lawns, and steppes, and aquatic and semi-aquatic ecosystems. All stakeholders are involved in the conservation of these protected sites to prevent the gradual disappearance of biodiversity.
