2006 May 01Preparation of the National Action Plan for Adaptation to Climate Change in Burundi (PANA) Sectoral study: Natural humid ecosystems
Burundi must therefore put in place a strategy and actions to adapt to these
harmful effects on its development, especially since it has subscribed to the UNFCCC and other international environmental
conventions such as the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), the Convention on the Prevention of Desertification (CBD), the Convention on the Prevention of Desertification, and the “Ramsar” Convention on humid ecosystems.
The NAPA should identify priority activities to be implemented in order to meet the immediate needs and the most urgent concerns with regard to adaptation to the adverse effects of present and future climate change. This sectoral study, which is a contribution to this national plan under development, is devoted to the humid ecosystems sector in Burundi.
The three specific objectives of the study are as follows:
- updating and summarizing available information, climatic and non-climatic, on humid ecosystems, and on expected climate changes;
- determining the type and extent of damage to which humid ecosystems could be exposed as a result of climate change;
- the identification of actions and priorities to address the effects of climate change, without however hampering development goals.
This study will only be based on available data, it being understood that some of them are unfortunately old and fragmented.
