2011 Aug 01Prospective study on the environment and biodiversity of Lake Rweru in relation to climate change
Lake Rweru is one of the eight lakes in the Bugesera Natural Region. This lake, which plays an undeniable ecological and socio-economic role, is currently in a situation of very advanced degradation. Indeed, the extreme climatic phenomena characterized by very long dry seasons and very abundant rains over a very short period of time that this region has experienced in recent years have forced the populations to abandon hill crops whose lands have become very arid and to resort to wetland crops in order to survive. The uncontrolled drainage of the marshes that followed had unfortunate consequences on the lake's environment. The famines that this region has experienced recently have forced the population to put pressure on the various natural resources, in particular through uncontrolled fishing and the abusive exploitation of wood for various uses.
