2024 Mar 22Report on research activities on the evaluation of the impact of the extension of the Mpanda cemetery on the specific diversity of pollinating insects, for the months of December (2023), January and February (2024)
As part of the CHM-OBPE project, the Burundian Office for Environmental Protection (OBPE) through the program of research, information exchange, awareness and conservation of biodiversity in Burundi, under the funding of the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences (IRSNB), has the mission of conducting research on pollinating insects in natural and anthropogenic ecosystems in Burundi. It is in this same framework that a study to assess the impact of the extension of the Mpanda cemetery on the specific diversity of pollinating insects covering a crucial importance for the preservation of biodiversity within the ecosystem of the Rusizi National Park was conducted. The objective of this study is to analyze the variation in the diversity of pollinating insects between the palm grove sector, where the extension of the Mpanda cemetery is located, and the Delta sector, which does not have a cemetery, within the Rusizi National Park through the identification of species present in the study area. The results of the Delta sector show an abundance of Diptera, followed by Hymenoptera and Coleoptera. Natural sites attract more insects than disturbed areas, underlining the importance of conserving natural habitats for biodiversity. Therefore, this analysis highlights the importance of maintaining habitats favorable to pollinators in order to guarantee the pollination of plants and biodiversity within the ecosystem studied.
