2016 Feb 01Safeguarding protected areas for the survival of humanity: Call for the effective involvement of coastal communities
The development of this awareness-raising guide on the effective involvement of neighbouring communities will serve as a basic tool for all awareness-raising activities. Neighbouring communities are called upon to act on threats in order to redress negative situations since they have a direct influence on protected areas. The shoreline communities that are concerned are mainly:
- Farmers;
- Farmers;
- Fishermen;
- Hunters;
- beekeepers;
- Harvesters of medicinal plants;
- Charcoal burners and firewood cutters;
- The sawyers;
- The operators of plants for crafts;
- mineral resource operators;
The content of this booklet is a set of awareness-raising messages for each target group. These messages aim to improve the level of involvement of coastal communities in the protection of protected areas. This tool will also help protected area managers to educate and raise awareness among coastal communities. It will also allow coastal communities to become self-aware in order to preserve these natural ecosystems.
