The overall objective of this study was to identify the main socio-economic characteristics of the village in order to understand the following aspects:

• the survival strategies of the populations living in the coastal zone of Lake Tanganyika;

• the use of the natural resources of the park and the lake as well as the access of populations to these resources;

• fishing practices and strategies;

• breeding strategies and farming practices; and

• the socio-economic organization of households.
