In 2005, Burundi's first National Chemical Profile document was developed. In 2008, the Ministry in charge of the Environment undertook to update the chemical profile through the Project “Updating a national profile on chemicals management and development of a database for the management of chemicals in Burundi” with funding from the SAICM Quick Start Programme Trust Fund, with technical support from UNITAR. INECN being the agency implementing the project.

The updated National Chemical Profile and the National Chemicals Management Database were adopted and endorsed by the national stakeholders gathered at the Final Project Workshop which was organized on 4 November 2009.
