Vulnerability of woody species in Kibira National Park used by local populations: case of the Rwegura sector (Burundi)

The objective of this study is to contribute to a better knowledge of the woody species of the Kibira National Park (PNK) in Burundi used by the populations of the coastal hills in order to propose measures for the sustainable management of the woody potential of this park. The methodological approach used is based on the ethnobotanical survey that targeted 364 respondents for individual interviews chosen from 12 surrounding hills in the Rwegura sector. The analyses focused on calculating the citation frequency, the use value, the importance value and the vulnerability index of the listed species. Seventy-four (74) woody species divided into 67 genera and 39 families were identified as used. Fabaceae are the most represented (8 species), followed by Rubiaceae (7 species), Moraceae (5 species), Euphorbiaceae (4 species) and Meliaceae (3 species). The use categories that include the most species are firewood (82.4%) and lumber (72.9%) and the least represented is that of food (1.4%). Among the 74 species, 18 species (24.3%) are considered more important for populations around the Rwegura sector and 30 species (40.5%) present a very high risk of vulnerability. The study made it possible to identify the PNK woody forest species that are most prized by the populations surrounding the Rwegura sector and which require urgent management actions.
