Burundi's high-altitude swamp

High altitude swamp

The high-altitude marshes of Burundi are located above 1700 m above sea level in the mountain forest zone where they evolve into peatlands. The dominant vegetation is composed of Lobelia mildbraedii and Miscanthus violaceus. Other characteristic species include Helichrysum forskahlii, Hypericum revolutum, Rubus apetalus for the suffrutescent stratum.

The herbaceous stratum, which is quite rich, contains species such as Alchemilla ellenbeckii, Exotheca abyssinica, Cyperus atroviridis etc. The sphagnum pads bear witness to the relatively low thermal conditions characteristic of the ridge region. The disappearance of this vegetation often gives way to plant formations caused by Cyperus latifolius. Cyperus atroviridis, Cyperus distans, Centella asiatica, Hypericum humbertii, Spermacoce princeae, Cyperus laevigatus, etc. are still found there.

In the Cyperus latifolius formation, the suffrutescent stratum is very small and poor in species, but we can still note, towards the periphery, the presence of species such as Dissotis throthae, Phyllanthus amarus, Dissotis amarus, Dissotis amarus, Dissotis Brazzae, Dissotis canescens, etc. Very flooded environments develop a flora composed of the genera Nymphaea, Potamogeton, Utricularia, etc.
