National Center for Artificial Insemination

CNIA is a state body responsible for the national artificial insemination program. It regularly receives genes from several European countries. Nowadays, bovine genetic resources are still mostly represented by the local “Ankolé” breed. Endowed with good hardiness, Ankolé has modest reproductive parameters and poor production performances. Several initiatives have been undertaken for its genetic improvement, in particular the introduction of so-called “exotic” breeds (Frisian, Jersey, Swiss Brown, etc.) for milk, the introduction of the Sahiwal cattle breed and the Boer goat breed for meat.
