Protection of fish breeding areas on Lake Tanganyika in Burundi

Burundi's fish catch comes almost entirely from Burundi in Lake Tanganyika, whose waters are shared by the Democratic Republic of Congo, Tanzania and Zambia. The lake is the second largest lake in Africa, and also the second deepest lake in the world with an average depth of 570 m, reaching about 1,500 meters to the south. Additionally, Lake Tanganyika is considered a wildlife treasure for its unique and native aquatic species of fish, snails, crabs, shrimp, sponges, and many other organisms.

Fisheries adjacent to human settlements are associated with high population densities and are subject to high fishing pressure from a range of fishing gear. There are indications not only of a reduction in catches, but also of changes in the composition of the catch. According to available statistics, fish catches in Lake Tanganyika in Burundi increased from around 17,000 tons in 2000 to 12,000 tons in 2011.

In an effort to restore the sustainable capture of the lake, the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock through its Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture Waters launched a project in 2012 to protect the fish breeding grounds of Lake Tanganyika. The video focuses on the protection of fish breeding areas on Lake Tanganyika in Burundi.
