Bujumbura-Mairie: When the floods worry the representatives of the people

The representatives of the Burundian people are concerned about the recurrent floods that occur in the city of Bujumbura every time it rains. They call on the government to take adequate measures to combat this disaster.

The floods that are taking place in the city of Bujumbura are worrying the representatives of the Burundian people. “Every time it rains, some roads automatically become impassable as a result of flooding. Some places are becoming inaccessible,” deplores Senator Victor Girukwishaka, during the presentation of the report on the implementation of the government program for the first half of 2020-2021 by Prime Minister Alain Guillaume Bunyoni.

These concerns are also shared by residents of the city of Bujumbura who spoke to Burundi Eco. “Floods make mobility difficult. Traffic jams are intensifying,” they warn. If it rains, they indicate that torrential waters are invading the roads, as most gutters are small. “Another anomaly is that they are blocked by plastic bags and other deposits. For all these reasons, the waters create a path for themselves. As a result of this situation, it was found that some roads turn into small lakes. As a result, getting around becomes a headache. Pedestrians wade through stagnant water,” they say. In some areas, they argue that some even pay a certain amount of money to strong young boys to help them cross the roads. They put on their backs to drop them off on the other side of the road. In addition, as a result of these floods, infrastructures that are not built from sustainable materials keep collapsing.
