2021 Dec 16Burundi celebrates International Environment Day
Burundi, via the Ministry of the Environment, Agriculture and Livestock, with the support of its technical and financial partners, joined the whole world on Thursday, June 24, 2021, to celebrate the World Day for the Environment and Biodiversity coupled with those of water, waste recycling, waste recycling, desertification and drought, with the activities to launch the 2021-2022 forest campaign.
The activities to celebrate these days and the launch of the forest campaign, edition 2021-2022, took place on the Rugendo hill (zone Rugajo) in Mugina commune in the province of Cibitoke and began with the preparation of the nurseries.
These days are celebrated in Burundi under the theme: “Not acting in the restoration of ecosystems is failing biodiversity and the fight against desertification”. According to the Permanent Secretary at the Ministry in charge of the Environment Emmanuel Ndorimana, the combination of celebrating these days is motivated by their similarities, they are all related to the environment, he said.
Emanuel Ndorimana said that the choice of this year's theme in Burundi is in line with the priorities of the hard-working and responsible government in order to achieve its bet “that every mouth has something to eat and every pocket has money.”
Among its priorities, the Government of Burundi wants Burundi to have sufficient and good quality water for consumption and irrigation during the dry season, in order to increase production. It is in this perspective that as part of the implementation of the national environmental protection policy, the Government of Burundi established the Ewe Burundi Urambaye project from where the Permanent Secretary asked the population to join this project.
