Burundi: The impact of floods (El Niño effects) Flash Update No.

In Burundi, the El Niño phenomenon has caused torrential rains, floods and landslides, more than 237,000 people are affected (55% are women), more than 42,000 displaced (57% are women), 29 deaths, and 175 injured people, since the start of the rainy season in September 2023.

• From January to mid-April 2024, more than 179,200 people were affected and more than 31,200 people were displaced. The provinces most affected are those of Cibitoke, Bubanza, Bujumbura and Rumonge.

• The Government of Burundi and the United Nations System launched a statement on 14 April 2024, recognizing the emergency situation and calling for more mobilization to respond to urgent needs. A response plan to floods and the effects of the El Niño phenomenon, targeting 306,000 people in need of urgent humanitarian assistance, has been developed.

• Humanitarian partners, in support of the Government of Burundi, are in the process of implementing responses to save lives, but the need for resources remains significant due to the low funding of the humanitarian response.

• The level of Lake Tanganyika continues to rise, flooding the coastal areas; peak floods in the lake are usually recorded during the period from May to early June.

This Flash Update is developed by OCHA, in coordination with humanitarian partners and authorities in Burundi. It covers the situation as of April 26, 2024.
