The rainy season is back. The 2022A growing season was launched last weekend in Karuzi on the sidelines of the celebration of the International Food Day on October 16, 2021. Moreover, the general management of the Institute of Geographic Sciences of Burundi (IGEBU) invites farmers to proceed with sowing. And this direction to reassure that the rainfall is normal.
From another point of view, the rainy season is synonymous with misfortunes. It is often accompanied by unprecedented disasters. Between September and October of this year, there were several material damages. Since 2018, recalls OCHA, 445 natural disasters have been identified that have affected more than 270,000 people in Burundi. Of these, at least 100,000 have been forced to move to seek shelter elsewhere and new ways of living. Torrential rains, floods, landslides, and high winds repeatedly damage homes, schools, hospitals, roads, and other infrastructure. Excessive rain in some areas and a lack of rainfall in others destroy crops and reduce harvests.
