Chimpanzees, cousins of the human species under threat

Chimpanzees are threatened by human activities, worry the Burundian Office for Environmental Protection (OBPE) and the 3C organization in a workshop organized on Saturday December 14 by the association of environmental journalists on the existence and importance of chimpanzees on the existence and importance of chimpanzees ecologically and economically.

Their habitats are gradually shrinking as a result of bushfires and deforestation. Poaching adds drama to drama.

However, according to Jérôme Nishishikare, manager of the Bururi Forest Nature Reserve, these primates contribute to the country's economy. They attract visitors who contribute to the public treasury to have access to the habitats where these great apes are housed and to be able to contemplate them.

The non-resident pays 20 dollars or 20 euros, the resident 10 dollars or 30,000 FBu and 5000 FBu for nationals.

However, Nishishikare is not happy with the prices set in Burundi to have access to visits to protected areas, national parks and natural reserves as well as their biodiversity. Elsewhere, prices are high. For example, the amount required in Tanzania to visit Gombe National Park is set at $100.

This is why, since 2015, a number of actions have been carried out to accustom chimpanzees to the presence of man in the Bururi Forest Nature Reserve, which extends over 3300 ha.
