Humanity in “existential crisis” is destroying nature, warns UN chief

(Cali) On Tuesday, the UN chief called on humanity to get out of its “existential crisis” which is causing it to destroy nature, in front of the heads of state and ministers of the world meeting in Cali to try to stimulate the last days of negotiations at COP16.

“Every year, we see temperatures rise more and more; every day, we are losing new species; every minute, we are dumping a truck of plastic waste into our oceans, rivers and lakes. [...] This is what an existential crisis looks like,” said António Guterres at the 16th United Nations Biodiversity Conference.

In Cali, 196 countries have been trying since October 21 to agree their positions on how to meet the goals set two years ago in the Kunming-Montreal agreement by 2030: place 30% of the planet under minimum protection, reduce by half the risks of pesticides and the introduction of invasive species, mobilize 200 billion dollars per year for nature, etc.
