Three ministries, including that of the environment, agriculture and livestock, of National Education and of Scientific Research, of National Education and Scientific Research and that of National Solidarity, Social Affairs and Gender, received on Friday November 03, on behalf of the Government of Burundi, from the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI), a donation of 4.5 tons of 7 varieties of pre_base rice seeds as part of the seed circuit to be developed. they also received 40 tons of paddy rice to assist disaster victims.
These 7 varieties of pre-base rice seeds delivered by IRRI to the Ministry responsible for agriculture in these areas to develop them are: Gwizumwimbu, Mugwiza, Musesekara, Kazosi, Kazosi, Komboka, Ruete, Musaruro.
The Representative of IRRI in Burundi indicates that this institute carries out research on rice in collaboration with the rice farming population and the varieties resulting from the research are handed over to the Ministry of Agriculture so that it in turn develops them via ISABU and then distributes them to rice farmers.
According to the Permanent Secretary at the Ministry in charge of National Education, Scientific Research, Farmers.Frédéric Bangirinama, in accordance with the principles of the National Development Plan PND2018_2027, research must be taken into account to solve the problems that haunt the population, including the search for selected seeds to send them to farmers. Frédéric Bangirinama, thanks the IRRI research institute for its contribution in the research on productive and disease-resistant rice seeds to increase production.
As for the Permanent Secretary at the Ministry in charge of Agriculture Emmanuel Ndorimana, he said that research is the pillar of agriculture so that the ministry can achieve the government's objective, that every mouth has food and every pocket has money.
The 7 varieties received from IRRI will be made available to ISABU so that it in turn multiplies the seeds or gives them to seed multipliers who will then distribute them to rice farmers. At the Ministry of National Solidarity, which received 40 tons of paddy rice, they say they are satisfied with the help from IRRI, which will allow the ministry to come to the aid of victims of climate hazards and natural disasters.
