2022 Apr 20Kigwena Nature Reserve, a poorly protected and under-exploited ecosystem
The Governor of Rumonge Province Consolator Nitunga paid a guided visit to the Kigwena Nature Reserve on Wednesday, April 13, 2022. The observation was that this 565ha forest should be protected and developed to attract more tourists.
It is a peri-Guinean forest located on the shores of Lake Tanganyika. Its fauna is composed of monkeys, snakes, birds and hippopotamuses.
As for the flora, there are various types of trees, some of which resemble those of the forest of Equatorial Guinea. Unfortunately, acknowledged the Governor, this ecosystem is not sufficiently protected: only two forest rangers must monitor 565 ha and fight against poaching and those who enter in search of firewood.
As for those who claim to own land in the Kigwena Nature Reserve, the Governor of the province Rumonge Consolateur Nitunga considers that their allegations are unfounded as this reserve has been protected by law since 1958. Instead, it invites the surrounding populations to respect the law that prohibits any activity in this nature reserve.
