The non-functioning of the Gatura dam causes unfortunate consequences

The Imbo Regional Development Corporation (SRDI) indicates that there is a surge in rice prices on the market. She justifies this surge by the drop in the level of rice production. In March, just when the rice fields needed water, the Gatura dam, irrigating more than 3,000 ha, was destroyed by torrential rains.

According to the company, due to the lack of water, the season was compromised, production this current season fell a lot and the July-November 2021 season did not take place. The quantity of rice put on the market has therefore fallen significantly because for SRDI, one season was compromised and another was completely lost. The loss is estimated at around 17,000 tons per season.

However, the director of rice management at SRDI is reassured, the rehabilitation works of the Gatura dam are in progress, since December 15, 2021, rice farming will restart in the Mugerero rice-growing area, which has more than 3000 ha.
