2024 Apr 29The rise in the waters of Lake Tanganyika is higher than normal
The Geographic Institute of Burundi (IGEBU) conducted a raid on Tuesday, April 9, 2024, on its manual and automatic hydrological stations that transmit data to the IGEBU server in the Gatumba zone, at the port of Bujumbura and that of Saga Resha in Minago in Minago in the province of Rumonge to inquire about the rise in the waters of Lake Tanganyika.
According to the Director General of IGEBU Augustin Ngenzirabona, the rise in the waters of Lake Tanganyika is much higher than normal because according to the figures, the level of the lake is 777.01 m, these figures are comparable to those of 1964 when the level of the lake reached 778 m.
Augustin Ngenzirabona said that the waters of the lake have continued to rise in recent months. He said that since the start of the rainy season, the lake's waters have risen by 20 to 22 mm per month.
According to weather forecasts, the cause of the rise in the waters of Lake Tanganyika is the heavy rains in the region that cause the rivers that feed the basin of Lake Tanganyika to overflow.
According to the director general of IGEBU, the main mission of the Geographic Institute of Burundi is to collect the data that it will transmit to the national platform in charge of natural disaster management, which will manage this disaster of rising waters in Lake Tanganyika.
The Director General of IGEBU, Augustin Ngenzirabona suggests that the services in charge of urban planning should always consider hydrological data when constructing beside the lake by making columns and building the infrastructure above to tame water, like other countries that are undergoing the same boom, such as Gabon and India.
