Poaching, bushfires, illegal fishing, the lack of forest rangers, tourist guides, protective equipment for forest rangers, surveillance cameras and infrastructure for welcoming tourists, GPS that guide tourists in the location of places to visit are some of the challenges facing Ruvubu National Park. These are the words of the manager of the said park, Marc Bakundintwari.
With an area of approximately 50,800 hectares, Ruvubu National Park extends over four provinces including Cankuzo, Ruyigi, Karusi and Muyinga. It extends over a vast area of land covered by savannah, trees and shrubs, grasses, and a forest gallery at the same time. It has a multitude of animals including 44 species of mammals, mostly composed of buffaloes, hippopotamuses and crocodiles. It still has more than 425 species of birds, fourteen species of fish and a large number of reptiles but also carnivores represented by tigers and primates.
