2021 Nov 17Use of gas: should stereotypes be broken?
The inhabitants of Bujumbura, an economic capital estimated at around 1 million, have not yet become accustomed to the use of gas (butane and propane). However, it constitutes an added value in the protection of the environment. It does not emit greenhouse gases and waste. Investors in the gas sector confirm that this product is exempt from taxes and duties.
On Wednesday, October 7, 2020, the issue of the use of gas worried the representatives of the people. This was during the analysis and adoption of the bill revising Law No. 1/12 of 29 July 2013 on value added tax (VAT).
To break with the practice of using firewood in households and preserve the environment, the deputies believed that the use of gas would be an alternative. To make it affordable, they proposed that it be exempt from taxes and duties.
On this occasion, Domitien Ndihokubwayo, Minister of Finance, Budget and Economic Planning, stressed the importance of encouraging local initiatives in the production of peat or other materials used in cooking. He also insisted on getting Burundians used to using gas. Thus, article 46 of Burundi's 2019-2020 fiscal law exempted gas from customs duties and taxes. This is to boost its use.
