World Environment Day: The need for an effective response to protect the environment

Celebrated on June 5 every year around the world, Environment Day aims to raise awareness and highlight actions in favor of the environment. Since 2020, Burundi has lost 5.2% of its area every year due to land degradation. For example, the Mumigwa Natural Region is losing 150 hectares per year. This has a very negative impact on soil fertility, biodiversity and food security. Land restoration, the fight against desertification and resilience to drought are all interrelated and the actions to be taken are mostly the same, said Innocent Banigwaninzigo, president of the Association Ensemble pour la Protection de l'Environnement (ASEPE) on the occasion of the said day.

These days, the earth is facing a lot of problems, including soil degradation, which directly affects people's lives and livelihoods. This threatens food security and water supplies and causes migration and displacement of citizens. Moreover, natural disasters due to climate change are among the major problems of the Earth. For this, according to Innocent Banigwaninzigo, Burundi should consider concrete actions on the ground, in particular reforestation, the drawing of level curves, the use of organic fertilizers on a large scale, etc. All these actions could safeguard the country's territory, 70% of which is made up of hills with steep slopes. In the general state budget, fiscal year 2023-2024, 585,888,524 from FBu were earmarked for the Ewe Burundi Urambaye project.
