2017 Feb 01Let's protect our pollinating insects to increase agricultural production
The production of food, the plants we grow or the natural plants, the quality of the fruits or seeds we eat depend on pollinators. Thus, for some time, interactions have existed between plants and their pollinators, interactions that benefit both plants and pollinators. Plants need pollinators to reproduce and pollinators need plants to feed themselves. However, it is rare for Burundians to think about pollinators. On the contrary, it takes actions that endanger them, for example by eliminating forests.
In Burundi, forests are very threatened by human activities related to the search for land to cultivate and plots to build houses. Our concern is to know if the elimination of forests does not have an effect on the survival of pollinating insects.
With this booklet we want to show the general Burundian public, students in particular, the consequences of forest disturbance on the survival of pollinating insects and plants and therefore on the destabilization of food security.
