Under funding from the Pays de la Loire Region (France), the National Institute for Environment and Nature Conservation (INECN), currently the Burundian Office for Environmental Protection (OBPE), conducted a study to identify the North Lake Tanganyika Nature Reserve in order to protect a part of Lake Tanganyika in environmental difficulty.
