Promotion of holistic health through indigenous and modern medical systems and socio-economic development of indigenous populations (Batwa) in the municipality of Mutumba.

In 2021, the Association Protection of Natural Resources for the Welfare of the Population in Burundi (APRN/BEPB) carried out this project which addressed the problems of food insecurity and nutrition of indigenous peoples (Batwa) from Mubaragaza hill in Mubaragaza hill in Mutumba commune in Karusi province. Indeed, this community did not have enough land, agricultural inputs, or other alternatives to meet its food needs. The present project aimed to establish solid and lasting foundations to establish sustainable food security and nutrition taking into account the culture, tradition and aspirations of the Batwa people. Its overall objective was therefore to improve the well-being of the indigenous peoples (Batwa) of the Mutumba commune in Karusi province. The main activities carried out are the planting of medicinal species used by the Batwa of Mutumba commune in traditional medicine; the establishment of the garden of these medicinal plants in situ; the development of vegetable gardens for households in the Batwa community of Mubaragaza hill in Mubaragaza hill in Mutumba commune, as well as the distribution of cabbage seed plants, onions, amaranths and eggplants that were transplanted into the vegetable gardens of members of Batwa households. In addition, hoes and watering cans for maintaining vegetable gardens were distributed to 65 Batwa households in Mubaragaza Hill. The implementation of the project also made it possible to install 65 improved stoves in the 65 Batwa households on Mubaragaza Hill, which will allow them to considerably reduce the wood used for cooking food. A goat and two hens were also distributed to each Batwa household, allowing them to fertilize the vegetable garden and the piece of land at their disposal.
