Natural monuments of the Karera Falls and the Nyakazu faults
The Karera Falls and the Nyakazu Faults (German faults) are natural monuments located in the south-east of the country in the province of Rutana.
| The Karera Falls, arranged in 3 waterfalls, flow in the heart of a forest gallery with large trees such as Newtonia buchananii, Sterculia tragacantha, Spathodea campanulata, Cordia africana, etc. surrounded by a savannah with Parinari curatellifolia and Pericopsis angolensis. | |
| The Nyakazu faults, located further east, are dug into the escarpment marking the separation of the central plateau and the Kumoso bedrock. They open in the Kumoso Depression. The bottom of the ravine is home to tall trees typical of mountain forest (Entandrophragma excelsum) and the very steep concave parts are covered by open Brachystegia forests. | |
The faunistic study of these places remains to be done. However, Cercopithecus aethiops is observed as an abundant mammal and Onychognathus morio as a characteristic bird of constantly flooded faults.
