Rumonge Forest Nature Reserve
The Rumonge Natural Forest Reserve is located about 9km from the urban center of Rumonge to the east and is located in the Imbo region. This reserve extends over stony ground, over thirty small hills whose highest peak reaches 1000 m and covers an area of 600 ha.
It is crossed by National Road No. 4 (RN4) connecting Mutambara and Bururi and is close to the villages of Makombe, Muhanda, Mutambara, Mwagu and Nyabiraba.
The Rumonge Natural Forest Reserve consists of open forests mainly dominated by the clear forest type miombo. The tree stratum is dominated by the genus Brachystegia with crowns that are contiguous. The species of Brachystegia microphylla, Brachystegia bussei, and Brachystegia utilis are the most dominant in the Rumonge open forest. The shrub layer is composed of Uapaca nitida, Isoberlinia angolensis, Isoberlinia angolensis, Albizia gummifera, Anisophyllea boehmii, Combretum molle, etc. The herbaceous stratum is variable and its coverage is all the weaker as the degradation of the soil is more pronounced.
The fauna is mainly composed of Primates (Papio anubis, Pan troglodytes and Cercopithecus aethiops). Antelopes are also found there, of which Sylvicapra grimmia is the most observed. An inventory of birds remains to be done. The reptiles often mentioned are ophidians (Python sebae, Dendroaspis jamesoni, Dispholidus typus kivuensis, etc.).
