2024 Sep 18Burundi: Responding to the country's major environmental challenges
Since 2023, a project to promote and protect biodiversity in Burundi has been carried out. This is an essential issue in this country where demographic pressure weighs heavily on the environment.
In Burundi, a very densely populated country, natural resources are under considerable pressure, which leads to massive soil erosion, drying up and the cultivation of the last swampy areas. Protecting biodiversity also means maintaining and restoring, when necessary, ecosystem services that allow sustainable agricultural production and that play a role in the regulation of floods. It also helps to prevent exacerbated problems of food insecurity, which can create serious tensions between communities.
With this in mind, a completely new program has been carried out since 2023, with the support of the European Union. It aims to strengthen civil society organizations and support them in the development of activities related to the protection of biodiversity and natural resources, the local environment and sanitation.
