On 8 April 2000, the Association was approved by the Ministry of the Interior by Ministerial Order No. 530/231, as a non-governmental non-profit organization (ASBL) governed by Decree-Law No. 1/11 of 18 April 1992 relating to non-profit associations, and under the name of Association Burundaise pour la Protection des Oiseaux, ABO in acronym. At that moment, the ABO immediately undertook to contribute to the conservation of nature in Burundi by working with the populations living near major national protected areas to involve them in the exercise of the conservation of national biodiversity.
