French Global Environment Facility (FFEM)

The French Global Environment Facility (FFEM) finances innovative projects in favor of the environment in developing countries. It supports initiatives that can generate environmental, social and economic benefits locally. Created in 1994 by the French government following the first Earth Summit, it has already supported several projects in more than 120 countries, two-thirds of which are in Africa.

The projects supported by the FFEM aim to preserve biodiversity, the climate, international waters, land, the ozone layer, and to fight against chemical pollution. FFEM draws lessons from these pilot projects so that the most effective solutions can be deployed in other places or on a larger scale.

FFEMs work in partnership with actors from countries in the South as well as in the North, public or private: NGOs, local authorities and communities, public institutions, companies, and with other donors and international organizations. The projects they finance are also supported by the ministries that are members of its Steering Committee or by the French Development Agency
